For six years Israel has occupied the territories gained in its stunning victory in the Six Day War. While the conflict continued on a lower level Isreali intelligence underestimated their enemies' progress toward starting a war to recover the captured territories. On October 6th 1973 Egypt and Syria surprised the Isreali command. While Israel could afford to lose some territory in the Sinai, on the Golan Heights the margin of error was small. The Syrian army had new weapons and three mechanized divisions massed to drive two brigades off the of the heights and beyond into northern Israel itself.
